The research and development of horizontal well drilling technology began in the1930s and since the mid-1980s has developed and improved rapidly. Horizontal wells havebeen used to increase the contact area between wellbores and reservoirs to improve singlewell productivity and recovery. China’s horizontal well technology has developed rapidly, the number of horizontal wells increases year by year and has formed sets of corollaryequipment. Geosteering drilling technique is one of the key technologies for successfulimplementation of horizontal wells. It can predict the location of oil reservoir and adjustthe drilling direction to the reservoir according to the near-bit geologic parameters.Geosteering drilling technology can greatly improve the success rate of horizontal drilling, save time and cost, increase the output, which is of great importance to horizontal drilling.Nowadays the world’s biggest oilfield service companies are pushing forward withR&D on MWD and LWD technologies and equipment, which have achieved very goodresults in practice. The development of the geosteering drilling technology in China is stillin the primary stage. Over the past20years, China’s geosteering technology has obtained arapid development. CNPC and SINOPEC have already had their own self-developedequipment, but the supporting equipment still depends on imports.Russia is one of the world’s biggest oil-producing countries, whose oil industry andtechnology are developing rapidly. With the continuous deepening of cooperation andexchange in petroleum industry between China and Russia, ЗТС-42АП-EM-MWD andЗТС-172M geosteering apparatuses have been introduced into our country and have beensuccessfully tested in oilfields. Many Russian companies are conducting research ongeosteering technologies and equipment in horizontal wells, the products of which aremore affordable and unique. This thesis is in four parts. Part One sets out the theory of geosteering technology inhorizontal wells and its current state of development in Russia and China; the Second partaddresses the history of the research and design institute of well logging (VNIIGIS), theSamara horizons Company, the Gerse Engineering Company and the Interlog company, makes a detailed analysis on the components, features and advantages, technicalcharacteristics and operating conditions of these companies’ geosteering equipment. Thethird part describes the three main directions of development of technological research, which are the direction of high-temperature and high-pressure resistance, the direction ofhigh-speed data transmission and the direction of using the rotary steerable system. The purpose of the study of geosteering technology in Russia is to introduce Russia’sadvanced drilling technologies to our country for Chinese company’s reference to promotethe development of national geosteering technology to a certain extent.
