The debate between Science and Metaphysics is the mostimportant controversy in the history of philosophy and thought aboutmodern China. It had a great influence on the change and trend aboutthe thought of20thcentury in China.It always has the conflict between the scientific culture andhuman culture in Ideological field. The debate between Science andMetaphysics was the continue of the debate between the sciencesand humanities about western countries. The debateerupted was not accidental, which had unique ideas and socialbackground: Firstly, the ideological trend of scientism were rampantin China. Science not only was accepted at the level ofdisciplines, but also evolved into a spiritual belief. Secondly,traditional intellectuals defend humanistic ideas. Scientific ragingmade people rejected the attitude to the traditional culture.Meanwhile, reflection from the European social science ignited ahumanistic intellectuals demands.The debate lasted about one years，and had lots of scholars to takepart in. And last，the Metaphysical failed. It had a great influence onthe development of Modern Confucianism. Which the Metaphysical pays attention to the life inspired the Modern Confucianism to thinkabout Why the traditional thought of Confucianism can not bringabout the Science and Democracy.Mou Zong-san who is one of the representatives of ModernConfucianism analyzed the difference of western culture and theancient oriental culture，and considered the ancient oriental culturecan not produce the Science and Democracy. He tried to combine thesubject of ethics and science，so he put forward to the ConscienceSelf-negation. It had a positive impact on eliminating the oppositionof sciences and humanities and understanding the Confucianismcorrectly. But，the sciences and humanities were different. Thebehaviour which Mou zong-san take the moral subjects on thecognitive subjects and force the conscience produce the science madethe science valuable. So the Conscience Self-negation was an attemptto mix the sciences and humanities.This article tries to analysis the background of ideological andSocial about the debate，and expounds the theories of variousgroups. It also investigates the great effort of Modern Confucianismand Mou Zong-san safeguard the position of traditional Confucianismand Communicate the sciences and humanities.
