This study analyzed the food situation for rice and the factors that influence the local rice production in Benin. The final objective is to propose policies and actions to be implemented to achieve a goal of food security for rice. To achieve this, descriptive statistics and econometric analysis were used. The descriptive statistics helped to understand the rice production level and to do the food balance for rice in Benin. The rice deficit remains high and it will be difficult for the country to meet its need for rice from local production by2015if nothing is done. The econometric analysis showed that yields per hectare and cultivated area are two variables that influence significantly local rice supply in Benin. Price and rainfall influence are not significant. This can be explained by the fact that the greater part of the producing zones is shallow and easily irrigable. Also pricing depends more on imports of rice Benin. These results suggest that policies to boost rice production are addressing on the improvement of yield per hectare. It’s recommended to cultivate more area and put the fertilizer available to producers.
