Energy links to the environment through human life and production activities, andthey form a closely linked energy-economy-environment system. Energy will producewaste that is harmful to the environment during its production, transportation,conversion and consumption. More than70%of the environmental problems directly orindirectly related to energy use. Shanghai is rapidly advancing its process ofindustrialization and urbanization. The development of industry, especially highenergy-consuming industry, causes a rapid growth in the scale of energy use. Energyand environmental problem is very serious. In this background, this article study onenergy use and environmental issues from the following four aspects.(1)Study energy use of Shanghai from1995to2012, including the scale changes,the structural changes as well as the efficiency changes. Shanghai through the control ofenergy consumption, the optimization of energy structure, energy efficiency, increasethe level of energy development, in the leading level of the whole country, but also hasthe very big disparity compared with other developed countries, there is still much roomfor improvement.(2)First, Study the law of emission changes of major pollutants, including airpollutants, industrial solid waste as well as wastewater, then we calculate thecomprehensive index of environmental quality by using principal component analysis.The result showed that the trend of the comprehensive environmental quality ofShanghai is not optimistic during the period of1995-2010, the environmental quality inthe decline stage,2011-2012picks up somewhat, environmental quality in improvingstage.(3)First, use grey relational analysis to study the energy causes of comprehensiveenvironmental quality change, then establishes model between the energy consumption,environmental quality, and uses the model’s impulse response function and variancedecomposition techniques to examine the main energy causes of environmental problem.The results show that Association of Shanghai for energy consumption andenvironmental quality is very high; there is a long-term cointegration relationshipbetween consumption of coal, oil, natural gas and the quality of the environment; theincrease of coal consumption for the improvement of environmental quality has certaininhibitory effect, oil, natural gas consumption increased consumption of environmentalquality change the play no decisive role. (4) On the basis of the above study, the paper sets four strategies to improve theenvironmental quality of Shanghai: The optimization of the industrial structure ofShanghai City, to promote sustainable development in environmental quality and energyconsumption; increasing the use of low pollution energy, optimizing energy structureadjustment; development and use new technologies, improve energy efficiency,environmental pollution control.
