In the environment filled with increasingly complicated competition, organizationstend to choose team innovation as the key process of promoting competitiveness.Knowledge team is the core of the organization and confront tasks that is complex,irregular, and of highly uncertainty. So the knowledge team needs to have theknowledge and skills integrated creatively to be innovative within competition.Following the logic that―evenness influence task information elaboration, andthen, team innovation performance‖, this paper puts forward and expounds theconcept of team evenness. Evenness, task information elaboration and teaminnovation performance are integrated into an analytical framework. The effects ofeach two variables among them are discussed. Also, the moderating effect of teamfunction heterogeneity on the relationship between evenness and task informationelaboration is tested in this research.We have several conclusions as follows: Team evenness improves teaminnovation performance; Task information elaboration mediates the relationshipbetween evenness and team innovation performance; Evenness promotes taskinformation elaboration, and then reach better team innovation performance; Withhigh function heterogeneity, team evenness causes higher task informationelaboration.The significance of this paper lies in: Firstly, we introduced team evenness as thenew dimension of team structure; Secondly, we explored the mechanism of evennessand team innovation performance, and enriched the research of innovationmanagement of knowledge team; Thirdly, we found that evenness would triggerhigher level of task information elaboration and improve team innovationperformance in knowledge teams with members of heterogeneous functions. Thisconclusion provides theoretical ground for designing and managing knowledge team.
