Research For Industrialization Of Agricultural Products With Regional Characteristics By Geographical Indication Protecting System

Since the emergency of the concept of geographical indication in1990s, manyEuropean countries represented by France, started to establish geographical indicationprotecting systems, they used the special laws and regulations to protect thehigh-quality agricultural products of their own countries. With the support of policyand legal protection, the agricultural products of geographical indication haverealized industrialization in high degree; they have not only achieved the integrationin production, marketing and processing, but also reached high level in productpromotion, brand operation as well as technology of production. The industrializationof agricultural products improves the added-value of agriculture, increase the incomesof farmers, and promote regional economic development. China, as a big agriculturalcountry, boosts various resources of geographical indications, however, both theagricultural industrialization and the implementation of geographical indicationprotecting system are in their primary stage, many problems are remaining unsolved,but it still means huge potential for development.Therefore, this paper, conducted a research from the perspective of theindustrialization of agricultural products with regional characteristics by geographicalindication protecting system. The paper summarized the evolution of the concept ofgeographical indication and gave an overview of its development in China. Besidesthat, by using the theories of information economy and industrial economy, this papermade the conclusion that GI protecting system could promote the quality ofagricultural products, promote industrial agglomeration, and promote theindustrialization of agricultural products with regional characteristics. At the sametime, this paper clarified the differences of industrialization between GI products andthe common agricultural products. At the same time, by carrying out on-field research,this paper chose GI product Yongchun pokan mandarin as case study. The researchshowed that the industrialization of Yongchun pokan mandarin had already had afoundation, but there were some problems still remained unsolved, such as the low technology, being seriously imitated and a smaller proportion of deep processing. Tosolve these problems, we should actively emphasis the role of local government andindustry associations, which could support the development of the industry.
