Simultaneous Engineering, also known as concurrent engineering, is a kind of commonly used engineering technology, emphasizing the effect of participation in collaborative work and the development mode of synchronized production. From the perspective of design and manufacturing process, it applies advanced design methods and techniques and breaks through the traditional concept of the traditional enterprise organization structure which brings about the segmentation and seal of internal departments. All the factors in the later period of development are taken in to consideration in the early stage, to contribute to the success of product design and manufacturing. Its main purpose is to shorten the product development cycle, improve product quality, reduce product costs, and ultimately enhance the competitiveness of enterprises. At present, the auto industry has become the pillar industry of our country,, and the development of new automobile is the core of auto industry. It is also a complex systematic project, including product design, engineering analysis, prototype experiment, project commissioning, product production, product assembly and other links. In the new product development process, an integrated and systematic working mode of concurrent engineering in parallel is used, such as a design towards the whole life cycle of products, a cross-functional team, a unified product model using the PDM technology and the organic integration of computer aided design, manufacturing, management and quality assurance system. All these methods have played an extremely important role in improving the design quality of a new automobile product, reducing design errors as far as possible, and shortening the product development cycle. After the year of2000, company L and the other domestic auto enterprises have set up systematic research and development institutions. Some manufacturers even adopt the internationally popular engineering mode—simultaneous project management pattern in developing the new models first.. For example, Shanghai Volkswagen, Guangzhou Honda Automobile, Changan, Chery automobile have all taken the lead in the use of the synchronous engineering management mode to develop new products. After setting up the R&D center in2003, company L had accomplished a number of tasks like modifing the existing models and developing new models. In2007, the company decided to be the first to use simultaneous project management model in developing finished automobile. The development project team for the new model F was established and led by the R&D center, with the technology department, quality department, production plant, sales department and purchase department and relevant suppliers involved. In the overall developing process, The project team would decompose and refine the developing of finished cars into many tasks, and coordinate the affiliated departments to the R&D center with the other departments in the assisting jobs. By analyzing many cases in the developing of model F, the author has found the three most important problems:the project development cycle is too long; the project structure is unreasonable; and the project management is insufficient. Then the author also puts forward three corresponding solutions to the problems, namely the critical route chart method, the matrix organization structure theory, and the time cost optimization theory. Finally, the author hopes that the analysis and suggestion in this paper wil be helpful to company L in the promotion of its simultaneous project management level, achieving the purpose of reducing cost, improving quality, and shortening the cycle, and making reference to other domestic auto manufacturers who are still in their beginning stage in developing new auto models by the simultaneous project management mode.
