Jiangsu is a powerful Chinese province in terms of economic, trade and agricultural achievement. The onset of the21st century witnessed the aggressive efforts of Jiangsu in reshuffle of its industrial structure, transformation of its mode of economic growth and promotion of international trade. The growth of export from Jiangsu, especially, of manufactured goods, has maintained strong momentum, On contrary, the growth of export of agricultural produces, however, is relatively less impressive. Vegetable, one of the principal produces of Jiangsu for export, is suffering from degressive competitiveness due to such problems as small exporters, noteless brand-names, dependence on narrowed market, under-industrialization and therefore has fallen into inferior position. With that in mind, the revitalization of international competitiveness of vegetable from Jiangsu would bear great importance to boost the agricultural economy and trade for Jiangsu province.This article, based on solid evidence and comparison, works on the vegetable industry in Jiangsu and systematically studies its international competitiveness and the impact it is afflicted. With the view of the gap between Jiangsu and other vegetable producing provinces in terms of vegetable production and export, the approaches of improving the international competitiveness of vegetable industry is explored as the key to the solution. The article has six components:Chapter One, the introduction, deals with the background information, literature references, approaches and methods of study; Chapter Two elaborates the concept of international competitiveness relevant to agricultural products, and the way the relative advance affects the competitive advance, based on the theory of comparative advance and competitive advance, as well as the achievements of domestic and overseas study on international competitiveness; Chapter Three is a panoramic study on the vegetable production, export and constraints in Jiangsu based on the data processed on the domestic vegetable powers such as Shandong Province; Chapter Four is a study and conclusion on the international competitiveness of vegetable industry in Jiangsu in respect of international market share, and such index as export growth superiority, trade competitiveness and dominant relative competitive advance by way of solid evidence and comparative analysis with the support from the import and export statistics; Chapter Five is qualitative analyses on the impacts affecting the international competitiveness of the vegetable industry in Jiangsu, such as quality, pricing, brand-name, marketing, productive factors, demand conditions, relevant industries and the government actions; Chapter Six is the pertinent suggestion on improving the international competitiveness of the vegetable industry in Jiangsu, such as improvement in quality control and tracing system, vegetable industrialization, brand-name strategy, improvement of vegetable cooperatives, and so on.
