A Study On Influencing Factor Of Rice Planters’ Cognition And Choice Of New Varieties

Food security issue is always the major strategic issues of national concern, to increase food production and to ensure our food supply safe is the goal what the scholars in our country research and explore. Presently, the contribution rate of scientific and technological progress has reached48%at China’s grain production, and the superior varieties play a fundamental, guiding role in the development of agricultural production. China promulgated the "Regulations on Protection of New Varieties of Plants" in1997and in1999formally joined the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The implementation of Regulations on Protection of New Varieties of Plants can promote farmers’ income, and impact the seed industry directly, it impact to the interests of both farmers and breeders. As direct agricultural producers, farmers make decision to adopt the new varieties of seeds at least through the sequential part of cognition, attitudes and behavior. The existing literatures are lack of study on farmers’adoption of plant varieties, only a small number of literatures research the farmers’choice behavior, but they don’t analyze the farmers’cognition behavior. So Ⅰ take farmers’cognition and choice behavior of new varieties as my study, discuss the farmers’adoption mechanism of new varieties after the "Regulations on Protection of New Varieties of Plants" promulgated in China.Jiangsu Province is China’s major grain-producing province, it is important in China’s grain production systems, and its stable output make an important contribution to food security in China. Ⅰ choose the rice planters in Jintan, Jingjiang and Hongze as the survey sample, after reading a large number of literatures about new varieties and farmers’ cognition and choice behavior; Ⅰ designed a questionnaire of my study, and obtained the first-hand data. In this paper, the basic situation of the sample farmers and their cognition and choice behavior of new varieties of rice are statistical analyzed, and then Ⅰ establish a Logistic regression model by the knowledge of empirical models. Ⅰ calculate the factors of farmers’cognition behavior to "Regulations on Protection of New Varieties of Plants" and the factor of farmers’ choice behavior to rice new varieties, and then identify the factors affecting the farmers’ cognition and choice behavior in the sample areas.By the statistical analysis and empirical analysis on the sample farmers, several main conclusions about this article have drawn:(1) The majority of the sample farmers are "small farmers" in the traditional sense, and there is the aging trend in them, highly educated, high-quality agricultural farmers are very rare;(2) farmers’ cognition to "Regulations on Protection of New Varieties of Plants" is much better than before, but the "Regulations on Protection of New Varieties of Plants" still needs to a further promoting;(3) the farmers’ education and the model farmers have a significant influence to the farmers’ cognition and choice behavior, and the directions are positive;(4) farmers believe a higher output of the new varieties and farmers’ believe a better resistance of the new varieties have a significant influence to farmers’ choice behavior, and the directions are positive, and it shows that farmers concern the output and the resistance of the varieties when they choose the rice varieties.
