As the process of regional economic integration is sweeping the world, free tradearea strategy increasingly become an important part of a country’s economic strategy.As east-Asia’s major economies, China, Japan, South Korea began to focus on FTAstrategy at the beginning of the21st century. In-depth comparison will beimlementated after study of free trade area theory and the three countries’ situation offree trade area strategy, and some conclusions will be abstracted:First, from the perspective of the strategic motivation, China, Japan, and SouthKorea are all involved in WTO multilateral trading system defects, pressure effectcaused by other countries signing FTA, and the Asian financial crisis. From theeconomic level of internal reason, the three coutries all aim to enlarge foreign trade;China and South Korea focus more on stable supply of resources. From non-economiclevel of internal reason, Japan and South Korea are hoping to use FTA to favorablepolitical and diplomatic environment. What’s more, China concerntrate on buildingbig coutry’s image and Japan considers containment of China as one of the startingpoint of the implementation of the FTA strategy.Second, from the selection criteria of negotiations object, China, South Korea andJapan put economic standards on great emphasis. Japan and China ‘s strategyhighlight is Asian while South Korea focus on building FTA with developter contries.Similarities of Japan and South Korea is they put priority on those who have intend toestablish free trade area with them. When choosing negotiations object China considercountry recognizaton of China’s full market economy status as the premise.Third, from strategic characteristic point, this standard can be divided into fourlevels. From the strategy arrangement point of view, China gives priority to thesouth-south cooperation and views north-south cooperation as complementary.
