With the development of society, the proportion of the elderly and the disabled increase year by year. Intelligent wheelchair was put forward with the national calling for creating a harmonious society and caring for vulnerable groups. With the robot technology, the ordinary electric wheelchair becomes safer, more stable and more convenient. As a new means of transport, this intelligent wheelchair can help the special groups improve the ability of independent living and expand the scope of their activities. Thus it allows them to rediscover the joys of life and make them integrate into the society better.This paper mainly studies the intelligent wheelchair applied for indoor, such as galleries and museums, such kind of wheelchair can enable users run safely without offending under the applicable environment. Since intelligent wheelchair serves the people, its safety is the basic point of consideration. This article focuses on intelligent wheelchair automatic obstacle avoidance system on the basis of its control system modularization, and specific jobs are as follows:Firstly, determine the basic control structure of intelligent wheelchair with PC and AT80C51microcomputer control system.Secondly, determine the type of sensor and introduce its role in obstacle avoidance in details, and then focus on the description of the infrared sensor’s working principle and the design of its hardware and software.Thirdly, select the appropriate motor and determine the control structure according to the principle of the BLDC.Lastly, use A*algorithm to make the global path planning for the intelligent wheelchair.
