Red Magazine is one of the representative journals of old literature during its resurgence in1920s. Its predecessor is New Voice founded by Shi Jiqun in January1921, New Voice was renamed Red Rose after the100issue was published. The last issue came out in January1931. Although the magazine was renamed twice during ten years, the aim of the journal followed literary purport, which can be treated as an overall decision. During the ten years of developing, Red Magazine not only kept the tradition of writing from Qing Dynasty to1920s, but derived new creative elements and text implication from the modernization of Shanghai in1920s and1930s. However, nowadays the discussion on Red Magazine focuses mainly on its external research and some descriptive introduction.Actually, Red Magazine appeared between the dilution of traditional concept and the form of modern concept on the horizontal axis of time, and had a close relevance to its modern metropolitan environment on the vertical axis of space. The perspective of the study on Red Magazine can be the old litterateurs’transformation of values in modern society for research, or the interactive relationship between city and journals that is modern media. No hard and fast line can be drawn between the two, and the writers of journals started to reassess their relationship between themselves and environment and traditional culture during the time of change and the emergence of boomtown. Therefore, this paper will analyze modern significance of old litterateurs’ writing from perspective of urban space.Whether Shanghai is in the shadow of war, or behind its opening as a commercial port, or during the industrialization, the space Red Magazine faces is destined to be a complex and unique presence. It is firstly reflected the heavy modernity in Red Magazine. It broke the previous simplified definition of journal as "leisure and interest" the research community has ever given, it expresses the journal writers’ blame and fear of the space destruction war has brought about in the process of emphasizing the significance of the modern space. In addition, under the influence of modern artifacts, experience of life and motion of people of lower class in the urban area will also be discussed in detail in chapterl. Secondly, as a popular journal of modem media, it is inseparable from the grasping of the people’s desire and consumption space, which is common similarity of popular journals. In terms of Red Magazine, its "likeability" mainly comes from display of journals’"light modernity". This portion of the text is not only connected to "heavy modernity" in the first part but also embodies depressive daydreaming, hidden desire and anguish of people from every social class in the social transition, which will be discussed in the second part. As a modern unique way of life, metropolis emotion not only contains new characteristics of the interpersonal communication between men and women after the rapid development of urbanization, but carries writers’concerns and thinking on secular ethics. If the previous two parts are writers’"thinking" on "modernity", the third part of this paper will explain the modern significance of journal writing by way of trying writers’ best tc find out a way to relieve urban anxiety in traditional memory, which is also a comprehensive summary to the stylistic features of Red Magazine.
