The virtual olfactory is that a user could smell real scents in a virtual environment whenusers interact with the virtual environment. It is an important part of virtual reality systems andthe key research field for virtual reality technologies. More and more studies show that thevirtual olfactory could be widely used in many fields, which include industry, medicine, education, entertainment and military, for highly enhancing the perception, immersion, interaction and imagination of virtual reality systems.By briefly introduced the background and significance of the virtual olfactory, chapter1introduces the research status of the odor generation device in the field of virtual olfactory, extracts the development trends of the odor generation device. The study aims and contents ofthis thesis are also presented.Chapter2introduces an odor generation device driven by step-motors we invented, whichcan generate three different odors. Firstly, we present the design though of the device accordingto the study aims of this paper; then, we design the mechanical structure of the device in details;third, we manufacture the physical prototype of the device. We design a control system of the device in chapter3for releasing three odors with certainquantities and transmission direction. By measuring the pressure force of our selected odorbottles, we select the type the step-motor; then, we develop the control system which includes acontrol chip, driving circuits of the three step-motors, control circuits of three fans, serial circuitsetc. We also carry the performance test of the control system.Further, we develop the serial port communications of the odor generation device to realizeachieve the data transfer between PC and SCM in chapter4. We develop an interactive interfacefor the odor generation device. Finally, we accomplish the integration of the physical prototypeand control system of this device.Chapter5tests the performances of our device. The performances mainly include theresponse time and he movement precise. We also carry some experiences to test the relationsbetween vision perception and olfactory perception. The results show that this visual and olfactory experience and evaluation and so on. The results show that the odor generation devicedriven by step-motors and its control system can be used to the combined perception research forvirtual environment.Summery and further works are presented in chapter6.
