With the rapid development of computer networks and the deepening of information process, the high availability of network equipment attracts more and more people’s attention as well as its security and reliability. ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) is a working group of IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), it proposes a new network architecture which separates forwarding and control elements. In addition, the architecture is open and programmable. This new architecture is one of the important development directions of network equipment. What’s more, more and more researchers pay close attention to the research of high availability of ForCES control elements.By analyzing the high availability of ForCES based on cold backup and the architecture of ForCES, this paper gives a method of failure detection and recovery of ForCES control element based on hot standby. This study focuses on the generation, update and synchronization of the list of available control elements, as well as how to maintain data consistency of different control elements. In order to detect control elements failure timely and effectively, the paper proposes a method which combines point detection with heartbeat mechanism. In order to achieve seamless switching of the master control element and an available control element, it adopts and improves a tasks takeover approach based on IP address if the master control element is not in working state. Finally, this paper presents the specific implementation process of failure detection and recovery of control elements, along with the tests and analyses of its function and performance, which fully proves its availability and correctness. This work lays a foundation of the improvement of ForCES high availability, which also meets the requirements of redundancy of control elements. Furthermore, by adopting the method of combining point detection with heartbeat mechanism, it prevents the forward element from switching to different control elements.
