Request along with the development trend of the computer system and the network, raising system safe function, strengthening the network service quality (QoS), setting up a computer system with high-avaibility has already become a consensus. Terabit router, as the core node equipment in the next generation network, its function quality influences the movement circumstance of the whole network directly. Studying the high availability of router software system can have great significance.Fault-tolerance and hot-backup techniques are the dominating factors to carry out system high availability. In this paper, by researching various high-availability systems and hot-standby fault-tolerance technique, combining with the high-availability requirements of Terabit router software system, based on the structure of Terabit router software system, it analyzes deeply the dominating factors that lead to router software breakdown and the corresponding solving schemes, then brings forward a new single-machine double-board system with fault-tolerance and hot-backup function by modifying the old designs of fault-tolerance and hot-stanby project. The results show that after applying this system, the high availability of Terabit router software system achieves 5NINEs level.The main work in this paper can be outlined as following:This paper analyses the present condition of high-avaibility system, hot-backup and fault-tolerance techniques, researches the high-availibility performace of software system that Terabit router requires. The research expresses that traditional single/double machine fault-tolerance and hot-backup systems cann't satisfy the requirements of Terabit router. It puts forward that the Terabit router software system should be developed on the basic of the system developed in this paper.This paper proposes the design of fault-tolerance and hot-backup used in Terabit router software system, puts forward the design of single-machine double-board system with fault-tolerance and hot-backup function, and apply it in Terabit router software system. It shows that the system indeed improves the fault-tolerance and fault-recovery function. In this paper, we analyse some fault-tolerance techniques commonly used in router system, including the fault-tolerance techniques for link circuit, equipments and switching fabric failure, the main factors that lead to router software breakdown. After that, this paper creatively proposes the design of fault-tolerance and hot-backup used in Terabit router software system, adopts a work method which combines hardware-redundancy and software fault-tolerance, hot-backup and duplexing together to replace traditional technique. The results of performance test show that the system indeed improves the fault-tolerance and fault-recovery function. And it can satisfy the high-availability requirements of Terabit router software system.Finally, we propose the concept of Similar-VRRP mainboard group, apply the design of Similar VRRP in Terabit router software system, and test it's performance.
