The increasing number of terminal devices used by modern enterprises results in the invention of centralized management mechanism KVM.KVM is the acronyms of English words Keyboard, Video and Mouse.KVM system can be used in managing more than one terminal device by a set of keyboard, video and mouse, which can improve management efficiency. This project is about the design of multi-serial port communication system, which is based on FPGA and MCU.It is an important part of KVM technology, it can modulate the signals from keyboard, mouse and video of terminal peripheral of KVM system and send them by CAT5cable in low cost, and accomplish the goal of synchronous communication between KVM system and terminal peripherals by using MCU and FPGA technology. This project includes the design of IP soft core of UART, the design of on screen display, the method of expanding serial ports based on FPGA and MCU and the design of hardware circuit for modulating the signals from keyboard, mouse and video.Comparing with special-purpose UART chips, the UART IP soft core based on FPGA can be used in other situations more easily. According to this feature, this project designs the IP soft core which is adaptable to KVM and has the function of adjusting the Baud rate and odd-even check.Using the Top-down design method, divide the soft core to several modules and design each of them with VHDL language, then use MCU to call soft core in order to realize the expansion of multi-serial port and make them useful by KVM system.By simulation of software and system integration and test, the experimental result indicates that the multi-serial port communication system designed in this project can meet the demands.
