Multi-layer optical networks have been ever a hot spot in research for the last decade. Traditionally, the research on multi-layer optical networks is mainly concentrated on specific problems, and the solutions to these problems in specific networks scenarios are studied. There seldom has the formalization research in which the technical aspects related to the routing for multi-layer optical networks are summarized and concluded with a high-level view. Ontology is an explicit specification of sharing concepts, which have been widely used in various domains, becomes a hot spot in research in recent years. In this dissertation, the related aspects of ontology are briefly intruduced, including its concepts, presentation, describing language and construction methods, etc. We proposed a formalization description model of the routing for multi-layer optical networks based on ontology, by which the routing for multi-layer optical networks is described from the aspects of traffic types, network architectures, mathematical models and algorithms. Then the formalization description of the routing for multi-layer optical networks is constructed by using these four aspects with editor tool protege. For demonstrating the applicability of the formalization description of the routing for multi-layer optical networks based on ontology, an instance of a specific three-layer network model of IP/SDH/WDM is constructed in this dissertation, and a mathematical model of dynamic traffic routing on this network model is adopted. Then we propose a centralized ACO-based integrated routing algorithm, and the performance evaluation software of the proposed algorithm is achieved. Simulation results show that this algorithm achieves reduction in blocking probability at high traffic load compared with existing algorithms. Finally, the whole summary of this dissertation is given and the issues to be studied further are also presented.
