Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is a kind of semiconductor. It has a lot of advantages such as low threshold current, easy to fiber coupling, a great amount of information transmission and suitable for making two-dimensional arrays, so it is widely used. In this paper, we designed and frabricated a new structure of VCSEL and detected its photoelectric characteristics. The main contents are as follows:In this paper, we elaborated on the basic principles and applications of VCSEL. And we analyzed the structure of VCSEL. Because traditional VCSEL is cylindrical symmetric structure, having polarization instability and easy to generate polarization transform phenomenon. In order to solve the problem above, we discussed the methods of VCSEL polarization control. And we researched the methods of VCSEL polarization control home and abroad. We had done two main reaserches on VCSEL. Firstly, we proposed a polarization control method, etching elliptic structure VCSEL to improve the polarization characteristics of VCSEL.Secondly, we optimized the traditional ring-type electrode structure, and designed double elliptic electrode structure to improve the quality of output light. We also researched the key fabrication processes of elliptic structure VCSEL, Through the experiments, we fabricated the traditional structure of VCSEL and the elliptic structure of VCSEL with new electrode structure. Testing and analying on the performance of the traditional structure and the new structure. Experimental results show that elliptic structure VCSEL played a very good control on VCSEL.and the double elliptic electrode structure improved the quality of output light.
