License Plate Recognition System is an important part of intelligent transportation system, which is mainly composed of three parts, license plate location, character segmentation and character recognition. The key technology of the system is license plate location and character segmentation, which affect the speed and rate of the recognition system largely. With the development of semiconductor technology, the prices of FPGA continue to fall, lots of parallel resources make a piece of FPGA to achieve multi-channel parallel License Plate Recognition System, therefore, it is significant for transplantation and optimization of the algorithm of vehicle license plate recognition system on FPGA.A design of the license plate character segmentation algorithm based on FPGA is implemented in this article. Sobel edge detection, tilt correction, removal upper and lower boundary and character segmentation based on template matching are mainly included in the character segmentation module. The experimental results show that the module can realize the real-time accurate segmentation of the resolution for640X480video images.
