The demand for high rate of signal transmission and large capacity is increasing rapidly in communication system with the information technology development. Traditional wireless communication system is not able to reach the demand. Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) technology which is the key technology of4G can improve the signal transmission rate and channel capacity without increasing bandwidth. However, MIMO system becomes very complicated because of several antennas in both transmitter and receiver side. The detection algorithm of receiver is also complicated. The performance and complexity of the detection algorithm can influence the quality of the wireless system directly. This paper focuses on the detection algorithm of MIMO system. The first part is the analysis of basic principle and capacity of MIMO system. Secondly, the paper introduces Space-Time code and its coding scheme with the analysis of Maximum-likelihood (ML) algorithm, Zero-Forcing (ZF) algorithm, Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) algorithm and Order Successive Interference Cancellation (OSIC) algorithm. Due to high complexity of ML algorithm and low performance of the other three algorithms, Sphere decoding (SD) algorithm is introduced and some basic SD algorithms are analysed. Then this paper studies Statistical Pruning Sphere Decoding (SPSD) algorithm and proposes two improved algorithms. The first optimization algorithm combines two pruning functions and the second optimization algorithm uses the ordering of channel matrix. The complexity of SPSD algorithm can be reduced by using these two ways. The simulation results show that these two improved algorithms can achieve a good performance as ML algorithm at low complexity, which means it can get a good performance-complexity tradeoff in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system.
