The principle of Software-defined Radio(SDR) is to implement the wireless communication protocol by software. Compared with the conventional practice with hardware circuits, SDR has the advantages of short development cycle, convenient debugging and fast upgrades. As with the rapid development of wireless communication, the period of protocol upgrading has become shorter and shorter. Therefore SDR has been widely accepted. In this dissertation, a SDR architecture based on GPP is proposed, and the distinction between this architecture and the conventional one is discussed with emphasis. To verify the feasibility of our GPP-based architecture, we choose WCDMA and TD-LTE standards as a benchmark. To begin with, we review the physical layer frame structure of WCDMA and TDD-LTE systems, and summarize the requirements on the hardware platform with respect to throughput and HARQ response. Second, we design the hardware platform to meet the requirements of WCDMA and TDD-LTE systems. The peak transmission rate of the system is tested and analyzed. In the following, we give a hardware platform solution in accordance with the requirements of WCDMA and TD-LTE, and detailed designs and discussions for all the modules as well. Furthermore, the peak transmission rate of the system is tested and analyzed. At last, we propose several data transfer schemes for HARQ implementation in WCDMA and TDD-LTE, respectively, in order to better accommodate the HARQ requirements. By simulating the generation of data on the hardware platform, we attain the loop delay for different schemes followed by thorough analysis. In light of our test results, we conclude that our hardware platform satisfies the requirements of both WCDMA and TD-LTE standards, and therefore the proposed GPP-based SDR architecture is proved feasible.
