Wireless sensor networks consist of sensor nodes which has the capabilities of perception, computing and communication. These nodes form a self-organization network through the mode of many-to-one, and transmit the collected data to the sink nodes through the way of multi-hop. WSN is not only one of the new IT industry in the21st century, but also one of the four pillar industries of the21st century high-tech fields. Due to the limitation of node energy, the design of routing protocol which can effectively save energy and prolong the lifetime of network has become a hot-spot in WSN research. The paper introduced the existing routing protocol in WSN, and proposed a reliable energy-balanced routing protocol after analyzing readily available protocols. The protocol establishes a global network topology in the initial stage, and then selects the next hop node according to energy cost function and updates node’s reliability information when there are obstacles above the node. With the consideration of the nodes’residual energy, hops, the distance of the neighbors and reliability factors, our protocol balanced the energy consumption of the nodes and effectively prolonged the lifetime of the network. We simulated the reliable energy-balanced routing protocol on the MATLAB platform and compared it with the Shortest-path routing algorithm in the aspects of lifetime, the average energy consumption and the energy variance of the network, which turns out that the algorithm, is superior to others.
