The wireless multimedia sensor network is developed based on wireless sensor networks. It isa novel technology of acquiring and processing information. Compared with the traditional sensornetworks, multimedia sensor network pays more attention to the information-intensive data (e.g.image, audio, and video), and it processing of the data type is not only various, but also a largeramount of data. However, the different types of traffic need the QoS (Quality of Service) indicatorssuch as the bandwidth, latency are also not the same, which also requires the MAC (MediumAccess Control) protocol has the ability to handle multiple types of data. The MAC protocolcontrols the way of channel access, distributing the limited resources between the wireless sensors. The MAC protocol has a tremendous impact on the QoS performance in the sensor network. In this paper, we study the wireless sensor in the transmission of multimedia data, how toensure the QoS application requirements, and also we analyze the characteristics of wirelessmultimedia sensor networks, network architecture and MAC protocol design requirements to bemet. Furthermore, in-depth analysis of S-MAC (Sensor MAC) protocol’s working mechanism. Thestudy found that the S-MAC protocol can only provide the best effort traffic service, it cannotprovide differentiated service for the multimedia data transmission, so it cannot support the qualityof service assurance. Therefore, on the basis of S-MAC Protocol, we propose a supportdifferentiated services and guarantee quality of service DSQ-MAC (Differentiation Service withQoS MAC) protocol for wireless multimedia sensor networks. This paper to solve some of the limitations of S-MAC for multimedia data transmission, andto deal with the problems, we make the following improvements based on existing servicedifferentiation mechanisms and resource allocation algorithm. First of all, by modifying theback-off algorithm, the traffic frame interval access, and priority queue, etc. We propose a newDS-MAC (Differentiation Service MAC) protocol to achieve differentiated service, and establish afour-dimensional discrete-time Markov analysis model to analyze its implementation mechanism.Using this model analyzed the network performance under state of saturated and unsaturatednetwork. Simulation results show it can provide multi-service differentiation mechanism. Secondly,we put forward a based on the quality of service to ensure the effective bandwidth estimationmethod. This method in consideration of locally available bandwidth, also considered interactionwithin the scope of the carrier sense node. The accuracy of the available bandwidth can be effectively provided when the request for access to bandwidth in resource allocation. BySimulating show that the new bandwidth prediction method can effectively estimate the networkavailable bandwidth to ensure that real-time traffic throughput and network utilization. Finally, inorder to provide better QoS supported in the wireless sensor network,we study resource allocationalgorithm, and propose a price-based resource allocation strategies. Combined with distributedaccess control mechanisms and rate adjustment strategy, we propose a DSQ-MAC protocol, whichcan support quality of service for the transmission of real-time traffic. Through simulation verifiedthe DSQ-MAC protocol convergence, and comparative analysis of the DSQ-MAC and S-MACperformance, it can effectively ensure the network utility and performance QoS support.
