Tunable semiconductor lasers are key components in the next opticalcommunication system and advanced sensing applications. As the wavelength of tunablesemiconductor lasers can be selected, they are used in conventional WDM systems inorder to reduce the cost. Higher speed, bigger capacity and more agile dynamic opticalnetwork are the trend of the next optical communication system, and tunablesemiconductor lasers can well support these novel applications, like wavelength routing, dynamic network configuration, passive optical access network and coherent opticalcommunication. Sampled-grating distributed bragger reflector (SGDBR) laser is onekind of monolithic integrated tunable semiconductor laser, which can realize widewavelength tuning range and fast wavelength switching. Also it is feasible to integratedwith other optoelectronic devices. So it is a promising candidate as the optical source fordynamic optical network. In this thesis, dynamic behaviors of SGDBR laser areinvestigated and the work mainly consists of the following parts. At first, the interactions between photons and carriers in semiconductor lasers areanalyzed based on the rate equations, and then SGDBR lasers are described withdiscussion of its tuning principles. Some dynamic behaviors of SGDBR lasers areinvolved in the interactions and the wavelength tuning. By comparing some dynamicmodels for multi-section lasers, the advantages of transmission line laser mode (TLLM)in simulating dynamic behaviors of advanced lasers can be found. Based on TLLM thedynamic model of SGDBR laser is established and optimized considering frequencychirp and laser noises. From the dynamic model of SGDBR laser, the direct modulationbehaviors of SGDBR laser are analyzed including intensity modulation (IM) andfrequency modulation (FM). Frequency chirp in IM, the IM response, the optical powerfluctuation in FM and the FM response are analyzed. The linewidth of SGDBR laser isanalyzed theoretically. The carrier injection-recombination shot noise (IRSN) isintroduced into the dynamic model of SGDBR laser. The linewidth of SGDBR laser andits variation when the phase section is tuned are simulated and discussed. The study on dynamic behaviors of SGDBR laser contributes to a better understanding of the dynamic performance of SGDBR laser and can be a guidance fordevice design and system applications.
