High power microwave (HPM) system is a new discipline developed with the plusetechnology. It has very wide application in many fields, such as defense and force, highenergy physics, EMC, energy industry and so on. Many countries have put lots of efforton its research and have made many achievements. At present, researchers focus on theresearch of the related practical application of HPM system instead of theoreticalconcepts and the single pursuit of power. As the radiation device of HPM system, theimpluse antennas have become the hot spot on current research. There is no unified theory of the impulse antennas in domain so far. Therefore, wefirst study and analyze the theory of impulse antennas in time domain in this paper. Then we propose some parameters and indicators to describe the performance ofantennas and also verificate the theory through an example of wafer monopole antenna.Several kinds of the traditional ultra-wideband antennas have been simulated byCST-Microwave Studio. And the results are compared with each other. The conclusionthat the traditional ultra-wideband antenna is not the same as the impulse antenna isgiven. So they cannot replace each other directly.Several microwave devices commonly used in HPM system have been proposed inthis paper with focusing on the coaxial waveguide, the resonator and biconical antennas. The paper discuss the radiation performent of biconical antennas and note that the coneangle of the biconical antennas is the main parament that affect the performent of pluseradiation. Then based on the research on the biconical antennas we design several newbiconical antennas to improve the ability of pluse radiation in HPM system. Finally a novel impulse antenna called the coaxial monopole cone antenna isproposed in the paper. Its structure consists of HPW devices mentioned before toimprove the performent of pluse radiation. The paper studies whether the novel impulseantenna can radiate pluse. And the paper has noted that the novel antenna is aomni-directional ultra-wideband antenna in frequency domain. In other words, the novelantenna can radiate shot pluse. What’s more, the radiated pluse has a high fidelitycompared with the input signal. It is a good model for HPW system. Next the articleindependently analyzes various parts of the antenna structure and further optimizes thestructure of the novel antenna, so as to satisfy the requirements of the problem. In addition, we produce a physical antenna based on simulation model. And thereturn loss, radiation pattern and the strength of radiated pluse have been measured. They are compared with the simulation of the novel antenna.
