With the development of information technology,3D modeling and virtualmanufacturing has been more and more widely applied. The virtual manufacturing technologysuch as virtual cutting is the key of fundamental technology of virtual manufacturing. Withthe emergence of3D modeling of3D data set as well as virtual cutting of3D modeling, anadvanced technology platform for the production design and innovation has been provided.The virtual cutting operation is an interactive operating means, and can simulate thecutting process of the real object to obtain the best operation of the program. Through thethree-dimensional model simulation, designers can directly analysis and process3D data setby the three-dimensional objects and conception, evaluate the feasibility and reliability of thedesign. With the increasingly maturity of the tree-dimensional modeling and virtual cuttingtechnology, there has been lots of good3D modeling techniques and software. Afterresearching the application of virtual sculptures and diamond-cutting areas, this paperdiscusses how to preprocess the3D data set(data reduction technology of the3D discretepoint set) and how to3D model based on3D data set. Design a virtual cutting method basedon3D convex hull model, to make3D convex hull model can meet the specific requirements,such as to obtain a maximum volume of a sphere or regular polyhedron, by processingvertices and interface set of the convex hull.The main work of the paper is as follows:(1)The features of3D virtual technology is the large amount of3D data set and the highaccuracy of the data from3D modeling, and the data usually includes lots of redundant data.Based on the study and research of the data reduction techniques, the paper optimizes a3Dscattered point reduction algorithm which is based on clustering plane feature.(2)By analyzing and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of various3D modeling algorithms, the paper finally uses extreme points combining the fast convex hulltechnology and tetrahedron subdivision algorithm to calculate the convex hull of3D discretepoints, realizes a better performance method to achieve3D convex hull model and calculatevolume of the model.(3)The paper gives a virtual cutting method of3D convex hull based on researching andcomparing several virtual cutting algorithms. The experiments show that the model aftercutting is close to regular polyhedron and the volume reduces least.
