Wireless multimedia sensor networks is a multidisciplinary cross hot spots of researchtechnology risen in recent years, under the condition of limited resources, how to reduceredundancy of multimedia data in transmission, and ensure the security of these data aretwo key problems in the process of its development that are needed to solve urgently.Above the two problems, this paper presents the corresponding solutions:According to the high redundancy of multimedia data and the limited resources ofmultimedia sensor node, this paper presents a new distributed image compression algorithmbased on Haar wavelet transform. Haar wavelet is the only orthonormal wavelet at presentnot only have symmetry and limited support, but has a simple and fast transform algorithm,so it is very suitable for the WMSNs which was limited for computing and storageresources. The algorithm detects the target image blocks that user will be interested and dodistributed Haar wavelet transform for these image blocks, take computing tasks to multiplenodes, and balances the energy consumption of each node in the network effectively. Thealgorithm can match the characteristics of data transformation well, it reduces the amount ofdata transmission in the network, and improve the accuracy of the data compression. Aseries of MATLAB simulations are proved that our compression algorithm has a highcompression ratio, due to only transmit the image blocks which the user interested, itreduced the transmission data in multiples, saved the transmission energy consumptioneffectively and prolong the network lifetime. The algorithm does the Haar wavelettransform only for the level1, so, it can guarantee a better quality of the image intransmission.In view of the security issues of multimedia data transmission in the WMSNs, thearticle presents a new distributed image scrambling algorithm based on Vigenere cipher.Vigenere cipher is a classic algorithm in cryptography. It has a simple transform and thecharacteristics of high security. In this paper, we will modify and use it in digital image encryption. Due to the limited computing and storage resources about the multimedia sensornode, the algorithm is used the multi-node cooperative scheme, and reduced the energyconsumption of a single node effectively. The experiment results show that the algorithmhas characteristics of the high flexibility, low complexity, and design simply, perform fast.Compared with the traditional image scrambling algorithm, the method has a higherscrambling degree and a better ability of resist noise. It is especially suitable for theencryption process of WMSNs.
