Welding is an important part of manufacturing technology, occupies the position ofplay a decisive role in industrial production. With the development of science andtechnology, welding automation and intelligence has become the development directionof modern welding technology can not be reversed, control of welding process is animportant part of welding automation, it has broad prospects. Welding welding processcontrol information is the premise, only to get timely regulation of welding parameterson the welding process information can accurately control the welding process, therebyeffectively. The short circuit transition welding of welding molten pool image of carbondioxide protection is to further improve the welding process, to improve the weldingquality, realize the foundation of intelligent control.Not only the existence of strong arc disturbance short-circuiting arc welding of carbondioxide welding in the welding process, also produced with splash and dust, short circuittransition process and frequent can produce arc flash, these to the sensing of weld poolimage and brought great difficulties. This paper designs the passive vision sensingsystem using molten pool, arc light as the light source radiation and reflection pooloverlooking the weld pool image, taken from the rear of weld pool. High speedphotography in global shutter mode, can get the edge clear and complete the weld poolimage, weld pool image information clear, provides good condition for the short-circuitarc welding molten pool image analysis.According to the short circuit to collect the weld pool image features in the process,design a set of image processing, image after preprocessing and post processingoperations are relatively complete, weld pool edge and remove arc after the weld poolimage. On this basis, the further design to extract a plurality of pool characteristicparameters, such as the pool of ellipticity and area, average gray, from characterizationdescription of the weld pool geometry and gray level distribution etc..
