With the combination of video coding technology and wireless communicationtechnology, wireless video transmission plays a more and more important role in manyareas, such as video conference, video surveillance, and emergency communications, ofwhich the bandwidth and latency in wireless video transmission systems are very muchimportant. A SoC for wireless video coding and transmission is designed in this thesis,which is based on H.264/AVC video coding standard to have good compression rate andCOFDM modulation algorithm to enhance wireless transmission quality. Further more,special optimal technology is design to reduce the latency of video processing.The major contribution is as following:1. Optimization on motion estimation based on H.264/AVC.A configurable circuit based on pixel truncation has been designed to perform thecalculation with different pixel truncated bits. An adaptive algorithm based on the circuithas also been proposed to change the truncated bits, which is implemented in software.Experimental results show that, compared with the unoptimized design, the adaptivescheme results in30%and50%reduction in hardware cost and dynamic powerconsumption, respectively, and the ratio of bit-rate increase is less than3%.2. Design of the SoC.Hardware modules have been designed for video coding and wireless transmissionSoC in Register Transfer Level (RTL), especially on video capture module and transportstream (TS) package module. Embedded software has also been designed in the integrationof the SoC. Furthermore, the video capture module has been optimized for parallelprocessing.3. FPGA based system validation of the SoCA validation platform has been established based FPGA to verify the performance ofthe proposed video coding and wireless transmission SoC, in which a video decoding andwireless receiving SoC is also been integrated. Experiment results show that the SoC canachieve wireless video coding and transmission with640×480@18f/s. The total delay ofthe entire wireless video transmission system is less than250ms, which perfectly meets thedesign target.
