Ergonomic Study On Presentation Mode Of Web Search Result

Because of information explosion, the presentation modes of web search resultcurrently used couldn’t satisfy the need of users. How to organize the web searchresult became more and more important. Our study used case study and experimentsto examine the user performance and satisfaction about different types of presentationmode of web search result, and with the aim at providing several empiricalsuggestions related to webpage presentation design.There are two studies. Study1surveyed current presentation mode of web searchresult. Study2included two experiments. At first, Experiment1examined userperformance and subjective satisfaction between organized presentation andnon-organized patterns. Experiment2explored the effects of four different modes ofweb search result presentation (the presentation mode by topics, the presentationmode by CRT, the presentation mode by source, the presentation mode by time).Experiment3examined user performance and subjective satisfaction within adaptablemode, adaptive mode, static mode.In conclusion, the current study firstly demonstrated that web search result withorganized patterns showed superior to non-organized, in both performance andsubjective preference. Secondly, in terms of four organization types, there is nosignificant difference in subjective satisfaction but the type of organized by topics isthe best pattern in performance. Thirdly, the adaptive presentation mode is the bestone in the three modes. According to these results, we advised web designers to adoptorganized mode of web search result presentation, and the presentation mode bytopics was the most efficient type in the current used organized patterns.This study used a psychological method to conduct an empirical study in the fieldof web search result presentation, and gave some advices to web designers which typeof web search result presentation to choose.
