With the rapid development of our economy, the demand for water resources isgrowing. As an important part of the national infrastructure construction, the reservoir,port, waterway and hydraulic engineering are increasing. Practice has proved that theexistence of sediment particles will greatly influence the hydraulic engineeringconstruction cost and operation safety, the measurement of the particle size distributionplays an important role in the planning and design of river, reservoir sedimentation andthe selection of hydraulic machinery.Because the particle size range is large in thenatural rivers, especially contains huge grain particles, the traditional analysis methodcan not be applied to determine the particle size distribution; digital image processingtechnique may become a new method to determine sediment grading in rivers.Based on the measured data, this paper study the image processing technologyused for particle size analysis of sediment particles, the main research contents are asfollows:(1) Introduced the related concepts of image processing technology and theconventional methods of image edge detection, compare the treatment effect ofprocessing sediment particle image with the different filters and threshold segmentationalgorithms, according to the characteristics of sediment particles the combination of theimage processing methods is presented.(2) Aiming at the drawbacks of traditional methods, the method of imagesegmentation based on mathematical morphology and edge detection operator isproposed in order to accurately segment sediment particle image(3) Based on the SLR camera and image processing software Imagej2x, the systemof sediment particle image size analysis is establish to obtain and analysis the image ofsediment particle.(4) According to the characteristics of sediment particle in the natural river, basedon the former presented method for measurement of sediment particles, and comparedwith the sieve analysis method and laser method, the results show that the imageprocessing technology for sediment particle image is not only unlimited in themeasurement range, but also has the advantages of low cost, fast speed, high precisionand simple operation, which makes up for the inadequacy of the traditional laboratoryparticle analysis method.
