With the high speed development of communication technology, IP network technology and wireless self-organizing technology,the integrated network using cable link and wireless link will be the future development tendency.The traditional RIP and OSPF protocol are specialized in cable link,when they produce and maintain routing information,they will occupy a lot of resources,so it is not suitable for narrow band wireless networks such as Ultrashort wave channel.This paper was based on the national comprehensive integrated network construction project. The project’s main goal is to design a routing protocol which can run in narrow band wireless link efficiently.The protocol will be integrated into the Internet controller and can fill the blank of using narrow band wireless link to networking.Through designing the protocol,we can accumulate experience in the construction of the integrated network,the network will multipurposely use narrow band wireless link,broadband wireless link and cable link to networking.The paper mainly studied how to improve the RIP to adapt for the characteristics of narrow band wireless networks, including the design,programming and implementation, debugging and testing of the protocol.Firstly,the paper analyzed the characteristics of narrow-band radio network and the influence of designing routing protocol,and summarized the problems if RIP was used in narrow band wireless networks,and then put forward the following strategies to improve RIP, such as defining simplified message format, updating incrementally and non triggered, compressing routing information.According to the above strategies,the improved protocol can improve the channel utilization by minimizing the times of message interaction and the information of message interaction.The protocol can reduce the occupancy of wireless channel resources and reserve more channel resources for business communication.Secondly,Considering the system network and routing protocol need, the paper gived a detailed introduction to the improved protocol called NWNRIP,including message format,compression algorithm, protocol algorithm,timer and state.Finally,when the NWNRIP was programmed and debugged in Vxworks operating system,it was tested in laboratory environment and used in actual environment to accept long time assessment.The improvement to RIP was proved to be efficent and available.
