Since the invention of the Internet technology, many different applications haveemerged over the years. The Internet brings the earth-shaking changes to people’s lifewithout question. Along with the exponential growth of data, the demand of networkbandwidth increases rapidly. However, Energy consumption of the current Internetcannot be ideal in terms. With the global energy crisis and rising energy prices, thepower consumption of the Internet is a matter of increasing importance. In fiber-optic communications, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) Thetechnology of WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) is widely used in OpticalTransport Networks. IP over WDM, which means using WDM technology to carry IPtraffic directly, plays a significant role in the high speed backbone network. So, it makessense to research on energy-minimized design for IP over WDM networks. As we know, redundant resources would exist in the network to assure the high availability andsurvivability of the traffic. We can make some resources be switched to low-powermode, in order to obtain an energy-saving effect if there is no heavy traffic. The thesis isdevoted to researching the problems above and offering the author’s viewpoint.1. The author analyzes the lightpath establishment mechanisms and energyconsumption data of network devices. Then, an IP over WDM energy model is built upbased on these analysis. This model comes close to the present energy consumption data. This model has higher veracity and stronger practicability. The rest of the research isbased on this model.2. An algorithm is developed to reduce the energy consumption under scheduledtraffic model in optical Grids. First of all, this paper analyzes the scheduled trafficmodel. In this model, traffic demands have some flexibility in the time-dimension,which is different from other traffic models. TSC_EE algorithm is proposed based onthe characteristic. By grooming in time and space dimension simultaneously, moredevices go into sleep mode. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithmperforms well.3. Energy-efficient algorithms under multi-layer protection in IP-over-WDM networks are researched. First of all, the characteristic of multi-layer protection isresearched. Then, the author proposes two novel node-link based ILP models ofshared-backup and dedicated-backup. Simulation results show that shared-backupstrategy performs better than dedicated-backup. Finally, the author proposes4novelheuristic algorithms. They are I_EE_MDP, I_EE_MDP, G_EE_MSP and G_EE_MDP.Simulation results show that all of heuristic algorithms can reduce energy consumption.I_EE_MDP and I_EE_MDP perform better than G_EE_MSP and G_EE_MDP inenergy and capacity.
