With the high-speed development of the information society, the ever-increasingdemands for bandwidth, reliability, confidentiality, and low power consumption in theinformation transmission system and the integrated circuit chip is proposed. Comparedwith the conventional electrical interconnection, optical interconnection has theadvantages such as higher interconnect integration, larger bandwidth, lower powerconsumption, minimal signal delay and crosstalk noise, and accurate clock distribution, etc. Optical modulator which is integrated in silicon substrate is the basic module inthe on-chip/inter-chip optical interconnection system, and its properties are one of thekey factors which directly determine the performance of the entire system. In this paper, the theories of the modulator and photonic crystal, numericalanalysis method and the development trends are introduced respectively, and theadvantages and disadvantages of the design scheme applied to each part of themodulator are in-depth studied. A kind of Y branch structure which is based onphotonic crystal is proposed, and the transmission characteristics are analyzed. Aphotonic crystal micro-ring assisted Mach-Zehnder modulator of carrier-injectionbased on PIPIN diode is proposed. Meantime, the transmission coefficient between themicro-ring and waveguide is obtained, which can make PhC-MRA-MZM get betterlinear modulation features. The results show that linear modulation can be achieved ina compact size by employing our design schemes.
