The mobile communications industry has been developed rapidly in recent years. Network technology has evolved from the first-generation analog mobile communication system to the second-generation digital mobile communication system, and to today’s third-generation mobile communication system that is widely used commercially. The core business of mobile communication involved only voice in the first periods, while low-speed GPRS packet data services were included in the2G era GSM network, and gradually middle-speed EDGE packet data services were brought in2.75G era. Nowadays in3G era, the speed of HSPA packet data services can reach tens of Mbps.After years of construction, mobile operators have established a mature packet domain core network. In the case of low-speed packet data services, the present core network can easily carry all the businesses. However, with the development of3G, mobile network data traffic is expanding tremendously, creating enormous challenges for core networks today. Operators are eager to deploy higher access bandwidth, faster speed next-generation mobile broadband networks. The study of Mobile core network packet domain evolution strategy is very important to operators. With the development of mobile data services, a lot of new applications emerged, such as mobile VPDN, mobile office, mobile law enforcement, mobile monitoring etc. The mobile Internet is changing our lives.This paper, will examine the present Qingdao Unicom mobile core network packet domain to study its GPRS, UMTS mobile core network packet domain system architecture, the main interface, and workflow protocol. In the meantime, the author also conducts in depth study of the EPC systematic architecture, mobile core network evolution strategy for the EPC, and proposed the evolution of ideas of packet domain. With the development of3G mobile data services, new applications continue to come up, thus, the author introduces the principle of mobile VPDN business and industry applications at last.
