Non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) is the effective combination of computer science and art. In this paper, a non-photorealistic rendering method of crayon style is given, and the method’s aim is to simulate the traditional art style and show the artistic qualities of the image. The algorithm provides a simple and enjoyable way to express the image, at the same time expressed the realistic style of art scene.From the crayon painting process and many crayon research, summed up the crayon unique artistic characteristics, and simulate the crayon style of color image based on these characteristics, the style of simulation get a better effect by computer. The main innovative work:(1) A new automatic algorithm, based on2D image, for rendering crayon style paintings is proposed in the paper. By analyzing the structure characteristics and artistic features of real crayon drawing texture, and abstracting a simple model of crayon drawing, an exploratory noise texture method is proposed, crayon style rendering for color and contour of the image is realized respectively, and the LIC algorithm is used to generate the trend texture of stroke in the YIQ color space, so that the final result is very similar to hand-painted effect.(2) By analyzing the artistic features and structure texture of real crayon, and simulating the color and texture features of pastel, an improved automatic algorithm for rendering crayon style paintings is proposed in the paper. In this algorithm, the smearing effect of the image is modeled by the watershed transform. Moreover, based on the conversion of the image color, a layered-based LIC texture rendering method and a noise texture method is proposed, drawing paper texture rendering for color and contour of the image is realized respectively, so achieves the purpose of crayon drawing style rendering with computer aided design. The algorithm can produce a result as similar as which is hand-painted, and this method is suitable for education, comic illustrations, entertainment and other application fields.Taking these analyses of the real crayon characteristics and painting process, and simulated strokes toward the hand-painted effect, so that the screen appears to have a sense of bump ups and downs. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
