The phenomenon of lateral inhibition is a common phenomenon in the animal sensory systems, such as visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and other sensory systems of organisms. Lateral inhibition mechanism not only exists in the peripheral nervous system, but also plays a crucial role in the information processing at the center nervous system. It is one of the basic principles of the nervous system information processing. Imitating the lateral inhibition mechanism existing in human auditory system, in this paper, we propose and design a new type of dynamic filter. Basing of the study on the theory of lateral inhibition mechanism, we develop the application of lateral inhibition in signal processing. In this article we first present the various lateral inhibition phenomenon in the animal sensory system, then summarize the main mathematical models of lateral inhibition and its classification. Basing on the study on lateral inhibition of human auditory system, a new type of mathematical model of the lateral inhibition filter algorithm is established. The lateral inhibition filtering algorithm is implemented by analog circuits. By processing stationary signal and time-varying signal containing noise, we test and assess the filter performance, verify the application significance of lateral inhibition in signal processing. The tests show that this lateral inhibition filter has dynamic self-adaptive filtering characteristics. It can change its own filtering characteristics in real time according to the amplitude characteristics of input signal to sharp frequency spectrum. When the noise strength is less than the signal strength, even the noise frequency and the signal frequency overlap, the filer has good filtering effect.
