China has created lots of splendid arts and culture in her long history, in whichpainting is one of the most important forms of artistic expression. The paintings whichare spread until now have great archaeological value and culture value. However, ancient paintings appear different degree of damage and fading because of natural orman-made factors. Recovery of ancient paintings plays a positive role to extend thelife of paintings. Therefore, it has the great vital vole and significance in the field ofcultural relic protection, cultural transmission and history research.General public can get to classical painting art and then take part in paintingprotection and painting recovery by digitizing ancient paintings and constructing avirtual recovery system. There are two major kinds of ways to recover ancientpaintings virtually according to different data acquisition methods. One is gettingsurface colors of the object by ordinary digital camera, and then recovering paintingsvirtually based on computer image processing. The follow-up studies are mainly colorrestoration and recovering damaged parts. The other one is based on multispectraltechnology and colorimetric theory. Colors of pigments can be got by calculating thespectral properties, avoiding metameric phenomenon. Comparing the former method,it is more accurate and credible. So it has been used widely by more and moreprotectors of cultural relics and museums.Firstly, we build a multispectral imaging system to get multispectral images ofpaintings by using a group of filters with different center wavelength. And then wereproduce accurate color by reconstructing the reflectance of every pixel.Secondly, we get several layers with the combination of multispectral technologyand K means clustering algorithm according to different spectral reflectance.Thirdly, we calculate the pigment compositions of every pixel according todifferent reflectance, and then choose the pigment which is most similar to the old onefrom database to replace the old pigment in order to get a recovered painting. The experimental results show that the method based on multispectraltechnology can be used to recover Chinese ancient paintings not only withoutchanging the original features, but also doesn’t depend on people’s subjectiveintention, so it is more accurate.
