With the using of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology, the systemcapacity and data rate of the wireless communication system can increaseexponentially. While improving the system performance, it does not require extrabandwidth and power. Spatial modulation(SM), as a new MIMO transmissiontechnique, can overcome the MIMO system disadvantages, such as multipath andinterference problems, also decreases the BER and reduces the complexity of thesystem while keeping original data rate and performance.Firstly, SM, SSK and GSSK are analyzed in detail and compared with each other. The advantages and disadvantages of SM are also listed. Second, the TCSM schemeand the TC-SM scheme, which combine SM with TCM, are presented. They makegood advantage of the TCM to increase the system performance in correlatedchannels. Based on above theories, a novel scheme called RS-SM is proposed. InRS-SM, the RS coder and SM are designed together, so it has the advantages both RSand SM, and it can improve the performance in significantly. At the same time, theRS-SM scheme is more flexibility than the TC-SM and has higher coding efficiency,so it can meet different needs of the date rate. The hard decision and the soft decisiondecoding algorithms are proposed and the simulation results show that the analysisabout the hard decision decoding is correct. The soft-decision decoding algorithm inthe RS-SM uses a novel soft information extraction method, which can effectivelyreduce the decoding complexity. Finally, the simulation results of SM, RS-SM andTC-SM show that, under the same conditions, the RS-SM scheme is significantlybetter than traditional SM scheme, and under high SNR condition, the RS-SM schemehas certain advantages over the TC-SM scheme. At the same time, the proposed softdecision algorithm outperforms the hard decision by about2dB.
