Remote monitoring for fiber Bragg grating sensing network making use of existingoptical fiber communication network can not only avoid relaying sensing channel, therebysaving the cost, but also increase the sensing network flexibility. Therefore, a novel GPONoriented fiber Bragg grating sensing data acquisition system based on arrayed waveguidegrating (AWG) is proposed. Quick digitalization of fiber Bragg grating(FBG) reflectingwavelengths which carry sensing information can be achieved and then the digitalizationresults are assembled as the sensing data frame suitable for transmission in GPON.First of all, the operation principle of FBG sensor and common multiplexing anddemodulation technologies are introduced. The multiplexing ability of WDM and TDM isanalyzed in detail. Several passive optical access networks are compared in the paper,GPON is chose as the optimal optical access network considering features of sensornetwork and multi-service adaptability of GPON.Then, a novel GPON-oriented sensing data digitalization system based on AWG isdesigned, which can achieve quick digitalization of FBG reflecting wavelengths. Thecomposition of core device wavelength digitalization unit is given and the operationprinciple of the system and main error source are analyzed. The sensing data framingmodule is designed, it can assemble the digitalized sensing data into frame suitable fortransmission in GPON. The sensing data frame structure is presented and its efficiency issimply analyzed.Finally, the simulation model is built in OptiSystem environment according to thedesigned digitalization system. The simulation of a3×3fiber Bragg grating sensornetwork is carried out with OptiSystem/Matlab co-simulation approach. The simulationresults are analyzed in detail and show the feasibility of the scheme.
