With the extensive application of communication technology in recent years, theperformance testing of speech communication system is becoming increasinglyimportant. One of the fundamental criterions to evaluate the performance of thesesystems is speech quality. Subjective evaluation is direct reflection of speech quality,but time-consuming, poor repeatability and stability. Therefore, it becomes important todevelop the objective evaluation system of speech quality,which is convenient, flexibleand reliable.PESQ algorithm is a popular applied objective evaluation model of speech quality,published by ITU-T Recommendation P.862. It adopts a perceptual model based on theBark spectrum, and has good adaptability to communication delay, environmental noiseand errors. The paper proposes a PESQ system based on FPGA development board. Thescheme of software and hardware design is introduced. The characteristics of hardwareplatform considered, project of evaluation system is optimized. It can evaluate speechquality of communication system.The work of this paper mainly includes the following aspects:1) The research background and development status of speech quality evaluationmethods are introduced. Through comparative analysis of several classic objectiveevaluation methods, it’s determined to select PESQ algorithm as kernel algorithm ofspeech quality evaluation system.2) The principle and realization process of PESQ algorithm are analyzed in detail.The paper carries out a detailed analysis of each module in the respect of speechperception mechanism, and measures performance of algorithm. The advantages andapplications of this algorithm are described.3) A scheme of speech quality evaluation system based on FPGA is proposed. Thework flow of hardware and software design is introduced. Realizing process of variousmodules in evaluation system is introduced in detail, and the function and performancedemand of system are analyzed. The characteristics of PESQ algorithm and FPGAconsidered, the whole project is optimized. Several optimization methods are analyzedin detail.
