As a wireless ad hoc network, wireless sensor network is an effective tool tocollect information from environment. Wireless sensor network consists of wirelesssensor nodes which are small size and low power consumption. In all thetechnologies of wireless sensor networks, time synchronization is an importantsupporting technology. Large numbers of applications of wireless sensor networksrequire each sensor node in the network to keep the consistency of the time. However, in wireless sensor networks, energy of each node and other hardwareresources are limited, so generally the GPS module will not be installed in eachnode, most wireless sensor network using the packet exchange between nodes tosynchronize time. How to use the energy of nodes efficiently, to guarantee thesynchronization accuracy, to extend the service life of nodes as much as possible atthe same time, is the core research of the time synchronization algorithm forwireless sensor networks. The ultimate goal of this paper is reduce the energy consumption of timesynchronization algorithm. The main way to do that is reduce the data exchange inthe algorithm. Based on application environment, this paper designed N-TPSNalgorithm. This algorithm can be described in two parts.Between the levels ofwireless sensor network topology,N-TPSN optimized the topology by select the bestneighbor which can reduce the number of nodes in data packet transmission. In thelevel of each hop,N-TPSN reduced request number of time synchronizationsignificantly by channel listening, which significantly optimized the number of datapacket transmission too. After the optimal design is completed, N-TPSN algorithm is achieved onOPNET Modeler Simulation Platform and result of that is analyzed. The simulationresult shows that the new algorithm can reduce the number of synchronizationpackets and the energy consumption of wireless sensor nodes effectively, which canmeet the initial design needs. The process of simulation on OPNET fully proved thefeasibility and progressiveness of the algorithm. Subsequently, using thedevelopment board equipped with CC2430chip, the N-TPSN algorithm isimplemented on hardware, in order to verify the performance of algorithm.
