With the rapid growth of the internet traffic and data services, the demand fornetwork bandwidth has been increasing continuously. Meanwhile, improving thecapacity of the optical transmission network (OTN) as well as reducing the systemcosts has received a lot of researchers’ attention. However, the high-speed,short-distance OTN systems reported recently is not suitable for practical applicationsdue to the expensive cost and complexities. We proposed a low cost EML or DMLbased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) system usingdirect detection (DD), which is simple to establish and has good coherence of theoptical carrier and sidebands. The O-OFDM system has a high spectral efficiency anda high tolerance of chromatic dispersion. Therefore, it can be considered as apromising candidate for future short-distance OTNs.In this thesis, we experimentally demonstrated the DDO-OFDM system based onDML and EML and the thesis can be divided into four parts as following: first wasintroducing the principle of OFDM and O-OFDM; secondly, we described thestructure of the proposed DDO-OFDM system and its algorithms. In the third part, weused simulation to verify the feasibility of the system. At last, the offline experimentwas demonstrated and the experimental results were presented. Moreover, a40Gb/s EML-based DDO-OFDM system has been demonstrated andafter80km fiber transmission, the BER is below3e-3. Besides, an up to18.6Gb/sDML-based DDO-OFDM signal over20km transmission has also been demonstratedand the BER is below2e-3. The experimental demonstration presented in the thesiscan be categorized the most advanced techniques in the field of fiber transmission. Moreover, the algorithms of synchronization, channel estimation, IQ imbalancecompensation in the wireless communication are applied to the opticalcommunication successfully.
