With the fast development of the Information and Communication Technology, theenergy consumption of the communication networks has gradually become a hot topic. Thehuge energy consumption will not only increase the operating cost, but also generate a lot ofgreenhouse gases which have a great influence on the global climate change. Taking effectivegreen energy-saving technologies has become the consensus of the communication industry inbuilding green networks. To study green networking technologies, there must be an energy consumptioncalculation method that can be used to study how a proposed green networking scheme caneffectively reduce energy consumption. However, it is unfeasible and expensive to build a realnetwork to measure energy consumption for every type of network protocols and algorithms.Consequently, we need a simple and cost-effective energy consumption calculation method toguide our designs of energy-saving mechanisms. In this dissertation, we study a general energy consumption estimation method forwireless ad hoc networks based on simulation platforms. This method is completelyindependent of the specific networking protocols and algorithms. It can be used to estimatenot only energy consumption of the wireless transmitters and receivers for sending andreceiving, but also processing energy consumption of the mobile devices. At the same time, three energy-consumption metrics that can be used to compare different network protocols arestudied. They are the total energy consumption of a network, network energy efficiency andnode’s survival time. Finally, we use the proposed energy consumption estimation method andmetrics to evaluate three commonly used ad hoc routing protocols under static and mobilescenarios.
