With the rapid development of Internet, online consulting service is becoming an important approach of information service. Meanwhile as a typical representative of online consulting service-FAQ has aroused wide concern for its convenience, unattended operation and availability without the block of time and space. FAQ, namely frequently asked questions, is a kind of information service provided by the supplier through regular gathering and organization toward frequently asked questions by users, which facilitates the browse and retrieval of information for users. In general, users can easily find the answer of frequently asked questions through online FAQ.In recent years, some domestic scholars also start to pay attention to construct a real-time consulting platform using the information provided by FAQ to realize automatic question answering. This approach derives from the assumption that user’s query accords with Pareto’s Principle, namely80%queries is provided by20%questions. In another words, through summarizing the numerous query records, those stable and frequently asked questions can be captured to realize automatic question answering which can meet the needs of most users. However, due to the drawback of regular manual summarization by the service provider, traditional FAQ cannot realize real-time update which hampers fast response toward user’s needs and cannot support automatic question answering well.This paper studies the generation mechanism, organization formation of FAQ information based on numerous query records by using theories and methods from various areas including information collection, text mining and computational linguistics, for reducing the experts’repetitive work. This paper mainly includes the following aspects:At the very beginning, research background and its importance are introduced, then current situation of relevant research from home and abroad is discussed as well as the content and structure of this paper.Secondly, we give a systematic introduction to the question answering system and discuss the relationship between knowledge base and the question answering system. And based on the characteristic of query information, we elaborate a basic description framework and technical details of knowledge base used in Chinese question answering system, including information collection and preprocessing, etc.Then, we devise a model of automatic question answering based on above knowledge base, accomplish a prototype of QA system base on the model proposed and verify its feasibility in practice.Finally, a retrospect of this research is given as well as direction for future research.
