The Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT) is the world’s top university inscience and engineering. For150years of development, the school which has been ledby the male principals welcomed its first female president. Susan· Hockfield wasappointed MIT sixteenth President. She is also the first life scientists as the principal.In2004, her appointment was a breakthrough for MIT. It also produced a sensation inhigher education of the United States. Susan has made remarkable achievementsduring his tenure. MIT school board chairman John Reed said:"Susan led the majorMIT comprehensive plan, the efforts to strengthen the power of MIT and its positionin the world."The thesis based on the elaboration and analysis of Susan’ educational philosophyand practice and put forward several suggestions on building the world-classuniversity in China. The thesis is dived into five parts:The first part: introduction. Including the why the question was proposed, thetheoretical and practical significance, research contents and methods, literature reviewand definition of relevant concepts.The second part: gives an introduction of era background before Susan tookoffice and during her position and the development of higher education in the UnitedStates and the Massachusetts institute of technology at that time.The third part: emphasis on Susan’s educational philosophy. Mainly includes:collaborative innovation concept, to expand new disciplines and its developmentdirection, to cultivate a new generation of leaders, serve the society and global sharingideas.The fourth part: mainly discusses Susan’ management measures as a president ofMIT. Such as: developing new global connections, consolidate the traditionaladvantage by innovation, promote the diversified development of MIT, successfulfiscal challenges, student financial assistance plan, and push the MIT campus construction projects and resources Shared around the world.The fifth part: Give four points of enlightenment of Susan’ educationalphilosophy and practice for building the world-class university in China. It includes:the positioning of educational Philosophy should be based on the characteristics andglobalization; The university should exploit innovation way with the timedevelopment; To build the community diversity on campus; Share of mind.
