In recent years, the literature education has gradually returned to English language education in middle school. The English Curriculum Standards (2003) make specific requirements for literature reading and encourage students to do literature reading so as to make up for the lack of literature works in the textbooks. However, mere are a lot of problems to be solved in the guidance of English literature reading in middle school. The most outstanding problem is that teachers need a new and available instruction mode to carry out the reading activity out of class.The author tries to work out the program by using literature method and action research methods to deal with current situation and problems of English reading and the requirements of the curriculum. Based on Krashen’s Sustained Silent Reading experiments, some theories of reading and key elements of literature teaching mode at home and abroad, the paper attempts to construct the teaching mode of Sustained Silent Reading to guide literature reading, and applies it teaching practice to provide references in this aspect.The teaching mode of Sustained Silent Reading has been done for one semester. Careful observation of students’reading and performance in the implementation finds that students have a dramatic change learning style, psychology and effect, which are characterized by the optimization of learning style, cultivation of reading habits, establishment of learning confidence, improvement of learning interest, strength of learning objectives, development of language ability, promotion of cooperative awareness, and increase of autonomous capacity. Study shows that the teaching mode of Sustained Silent Reading is of practical feasibility and significance in English literature reading.
