Our party and the country have attached great importance to the ideological and political education ofcollege students. The ideological and political educators have always explored issues: how to better achievethe objectives of ideological and political education, how to develop qualified builders and successors withthe attribute of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The educated under the guide of the educator“internalize” the moral society requires of its own moral feelings. And thus “externalize” moralbehaviors that meet the requirements of social development. That is the ultimate goal of ideological andpolitical education. To achieve the goal, the self-education of college students can not be ignored.The cultivation of self-education is the call of the times. It is the reform demand of ideological andpolitical education. Also, it is the inevitable requirement for solving the contradictions and conflicts duringthe development of self-health. Along with the times, college students have a wealth of self-educationresources. The new model of ideological and political education provides a sufficient condition forcultivating the ability of self-education. The development of self-consciousness provides the opportunityand reference for self-education. Therefore, the ideological and political education should clear the basicobjective, integrate schools, society and families, and cultivate the ability of self-education.With the rapid development of China’s socialism market economy and expanding scale of graduatestudents, college students’ ideological and political education environment has undergone more complexchanges. Many new problems also appear in the ideological and political education work. All of them bringabout a series of smoothly serious problems and challenges to the ideological and political education.As a starting point, this article explores college students’ ideological and political self-education. Thispaper consists of five parts. Specifically, the first part is introduction, and others are the body part. The firstpart introduces the research purpose, meaning, frame, idea and status quo at home and abroad. The secondpart outlines some the theoretical concepts in the ideological and political education, analyzing the meaningand features of self-education in ideological and political education. The third part mainly tends to findproblems in self-education through investigating and questionnaire analyzing the status quo. The fourth partidentifies causes for problems. The fifth part raises a few suggestions to achieve self-education during theideological and political education.
