Along with the rapid development of the economy, the deterioration of livingenvironment became one of the most concerned issues, more and more peoplegradually realized the importance of building a healthy body. As air pollutions likefog and haze limited the activities in the open air, people began to put their eyes onindoor exercises. Among numerous indoor sports developed in the city of Beijing,badminton is highly favored by the public. With the quick growth of mass badminton,various forms of badminton training institutions are emerging. The number of amateurbadminton coaches is rising, which leads to a higher requirement of their coachingqualities. Currently the studies related to badminton coaches are mostly focusing onprofessional or semi-professional sports school coaches, amateur badminton coach isbarely studied and has only been mentioned in the studies about operationalbadminton venue construction.Through secondary literature research, questionnaire surveys, interviews, andstatistical analysis, the present situation of amateur badminton coaches in Beijing areinvestigated. This research mainly focused on studying the areal distribution ofamateur badminton coaches in Beijing, their basic demographics, professionalism,coaching experiences, payment level and their training situation for coachingqualifications; the students’ value orientation and other aspects were also explored inthe research. The results are as follows:The Amateur Badminton Coaches in Beijing mainly spread over Haidian District andChaoyang District. The number of male coaches is disproportionally higher thanfemale coaches. The coaches group is generally younger in age, dominated by youngto middle-aged coaches and is mainly consisted of students, teachers andself-employed professionals. The education structure is relatively reasonable with anaverage of4-6sporting years,while few coaches are qualified with national athletegrades.1.The coaching professionalism is relatively low, with a gap of knowledge andcapability for further enhancements. Most of the amateur coaches are negligent inestablishing coaching plans and regularly evaluating students’ performance. Theyneed to improve the communication with students and form training plans specificallysuitable for the students. Ethical and Professional Standards of these coaches alsoneeds to be strengthened.2.Financial reasons, social communication and self-value realization are the main motives of these amateur coaches. The major method of obtaining coachingopportunities is through the referrals and recommendations by other coaches andclients. The average coaching years is relatively low in level, with a potential forimprovement in teaching experiences. Specialization of coaching is not high, only18.25%of them are full-time coaches. Most of the amateur coaches are satisfied withtheir payment level and coaching situation. The major problem in their teaching is thedifficulty of booking badminton courts.3.The amateur coaches are highly aware of the necessity of attending continualtraining courses. While most of them haven’t attended any till date due to the lack ofinformation about training institution and courses. This problem reduced theopportunities for the amateur coaches to attend continuing learning for furtherimprovements.4.The students and badminton participants have a high demand of coaches, butare relatively weak in supervising them. Most of the students are satisfied with theteaching level of the coaches.Based on the research results, this research put forward several specificsuggestions for the sustainable development of amateur badminton coaching and thevigorous growth of mass badminton in Beijing in order to enhance the overall level ofbadminton coaching teams.
