A Study On High Sex Ratio In Sichuan And Its Solutions

One of the problems in the demographic structure in China is high sex ratio. Since1980s, our sex ratio has been keeping increasing, which arouses people’s great attention. In order to balance the demographic structure, insure people’s safety and keep the harmony of society, many experts, home and abroad, have made wide and deep research into the problem of the sex ration in China, including the study on its reason, characteristics, consequences and solutions.Although the situation of high sex ratio in Sichuan province is not the most serious among all the districts in China, the unbalanced demographic structure leads to serious results. Unfortunately, there are only a few researches in the existing literature focused on the problem of high sex ratio. And they are limited to some phenomena in a certain area without any systematical analysis. Therefore, the author intends to provide an effective solution through a comprehensive and systematical analysis on the high sex ratio in Sichuan province.This paper lists out the present situation and characteristics of sex ratio in Sichuan after an analysis on the data of population census and the population database of Sichuan. After carrying out quantitative analysis on the results of the survey on the birth desire of urban and rural residents in Sichuan and qualitative analysis on society, economy, culture, tradition, technology and birth policies etc., the author gets the reason of high sex ratio in Sichuan. Moreover, through reviewing the measures taken by the government of Sichuan, the author points out the existing problems and puts forward some suggestions and solutions.The research in this paper indicates that the sex ratio in Sichuan has been keeping increasing since1980s, In recent10years, with the development of economy and society, the change of people’s value on birth and the comprehensive management of the government, the ratio has begun to decrease. However, it still higher than the normal and varies from different child order, region and nationality, etc.. The root of high sex ratio in Sichuan lies in the preference for boy, which results directly from the factors of society, economy, culture and tradition. Under the pressure of preference for boy and the birth policy, people tend to choose non-medical fetal sex diagnosis and non-medical artificial termination of pregnancy to meet their demand for the sex of their child. The government of Sichuan province has taken some measures to deal with this problem. But there are some issues that should be taken into consideration:the related laws and regulations still needs improving; the traditional value and the real interests are still hard to be changed; it is difficult to coordinate the managing works. Thus the paper proposes to establish a perfect benefit-oriented mechanism and a social regulation mechanism through strengthening propaganda so as to promote the scientificalness and effectiveness of the management.
